I liked Jeremy Brett as Holmes the best. The TV series produced by Granada in the 80s followed almost word to word the stories and dialogue as written by Doyle. But the episodes produced later seemed to have less of Holmes and more of Watson as Brett was ailing. I recently watched "The Silk Stocking" that had Rupert Everett as Holmes, and I liked his portrayal as well although the story was not written by Doyle and it sucked.

Agree with Basil Rathbone. It has nothing to do with Holmes, but he was an excellent swordsman who had to lose to actors like Errol Flynn and Danny Kaye because the role demanded it. A close second is Peter Cushing.
