I was given this novel by a teacher of mine when I was in high school. It is a fabulous book that blends the realities of war - death, torture, gore, pain - the power of imagination, and relationships. I remember that one of the characters struggles with how and when they will find Cacciato and in fact day dreams constantly on the means in which it will happen. it was a while ago that I read this, but I do recall reading a passage about lighting a cigarette in the pitch black, when at any moment they could come under enemy fire. very well written

I really really enjoyed it and thought the novel was balanced, and it kept me very intrigued. I wrote a paper on it as well I think - to which I think the novel provided a wonderful amount of psychological fodder.
