It depends on what you are trying to learn. Some subjects are so hard that you can not possible learn them on your own. Other subjects can only be learned by doing them yourself. For example, there are many self-teaching books on learning to play the guitar, but some people prefer to take a class with a guitarist/teacher. Either way, you still have to practice the guitar in order to learn how to play the guitar because nobody else can do it for you.

As previously mentioned, there are some areas in which you may learn better on your own and others where you need help. The ideal would be to have a mentor who could wisely tell you when you need which if you are uncertain yourself. It is arrogant to blunder into a field in which you need help but refuse it. At the same time, it is of no value to you to have someone else do it all for you.
