I would beg to differ from the previous answerers.
In general terms, Data is any fact or number. It may have some meaning or not.
But Information is a data which cannot be predicted with a probability of 1. It is always meaningful.
The statement "George Bush is the president of US" is a data but it is not an information. If i say that in march 2008, new president will be elected then it will be an information.
If i say, the sun rises in the east, then it's a data but not information but if i say that today sun will rise in the west then it will be an information for u.

Information is orderly data
presentaed in desired/required/prescribed format
precise , no more, no less, timely and as the information seeker wants it.
Suppose u want Export figure of India for 2005-2006 . The info is 103 billion US Dollars.
No much mumbo jumbo about economy, agriclture, globalisation, Industry but the figure 103 b USD has been derived outta all this mumbo jumbo....so the MJ from which you dig out required information is data

Data : Any raw fact, value etc, which is not complete in the
meaning. 23, com <= these are examples of data.
Information: The processed data is known as Information. The
information is complete in its meaning. ram is 23 years
old <= is a example of Information.

Data is a piece of information. Information is a collection of data.
Now...... Data would be, for example, eye color, hair color, height, weight, face shape, body type, etc. Information would be all of that put together.

With data copresion u take away the free space in the document and some uneeded information.

Information is a collection of data regarding a particular thing.
Data processing is the process that collects the required data to give a specific information.
Eg. consider you have details of student like Regno, Name, Address, etc.
Here each of Regno, Name, Address are data.
The Regno, Name and Address of a particular student is called information.
The process of finding or collecting a particular students information is called Data Processing.
