August 1, 1981, and yes, I'm old enough to remember seeing it debut with Video Killed the Radio Star by the Buggles. The Buggles also had another video called "Plastic Age/Living in the Age of Plastic" which was the title off their album. Other videos at that time that played quite frequently the first year were Ballad of Johnny and Mary and Clues by Robert Palmer, Look Back in Anger and Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie, I Won't Let You Down by PhD. Cliff Richard and Leo Sayer were other commonly airplayed videos. I could probably come up with most of the videos that were on that first year.
VH1 came into play not to long after that and played Barry Manilow and Air Supply and what teenagers played old music. If you watch VH1 Classic now, you can see a lot of what was originally aired on MTV. Every once in awhile on MTV2 they played all of the videos they had in alpha order. Now, I'm a fan of Youtube.com where I can find most of those videos!

..it was back in 1980 or so...and the video "i want my mtv" by dire straits was the first video.....or no, it was "video killed the radio star".......just "google" it!!!...lol...
