I have aol 7.0 or 8.0 on my labtop can I connect to the net if the main computer has 9.0?

Again on my labtop I have either aol 7.0 or 8.0 and I have tried to connect on the main computer and do the tcp-ip on mine but I cant get it to work. Can anyone help me? If so please tell me step-by-step so I can do it right.
