lets say i am going on a vacation. i cannot bring my rats with me. will they miss me while i am away? when i come back, will they remember me and still care about me? if they are being watched by someone who won't play with them out of fear, will they be happy with each other? if they are played with while i am gone, will they forget about me? i'm talking about a week long vacation, because i want rats, but i probably won't be allowed to bring them when i go on vacation.

also, would you mind answering two other rat related questions? here are the links.

As others have said, rats are very clever. They will miss you while you're away but they will definitely remember you when you get back. Make sure the person you leave them with is fully aware of all their care requirements and any problems they should look out for. Also, ensure you find a vet who is good with rats and the person looking after them knows the vet's contact details just in case.

Well done for asking all these questions before you bring your new pets home. You sound like you will be a very responsible rat owner. I recommend you come and join the Ratlist: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/ratlist/ There are over 2000 rat knowledgeable members who can answer almost any question about rats and their care. I got my first rats about two and a half years ago and have found the Ratlist to be an invaluable source of help, advice and information.

Good luck with your new rats when you get them and hopefully see you on the Ratlist :)

I had gotten 2 rats and shortly after that my mother found out she was dieing. Needless to say I immediatly left them in the care of family members and went off to be with my mother. I was gone for a month and when I got back my rats ran up to me and one licked me all over my face and both were so happy to see me. Yes they remembered me and yes they were fine with others looking after them. Just make sure your sitter is reliable. It sounds like you have more then one rat so they will occupy each other while you are gone. Another time I had to leave the rats and the lady who i left to care for them was scared of rats. she would check the water and food but not much else as she is terrified of rats. Again they lived and had no negative reaction to not being helf for a week.

your rat/rats will miss you cause rats have an instinct to get along and attched to just one person and that's the person that plays w/ them, feeds them, takes care of them, etc. but if you leave just for a week , your little ratie/s will be sure to remember you. they may become somehow attached to the person taking care of them while you're away. but one week isn't long enough for them to forget about you and attach to someone else.
so i say have fun on your vacation and your rat will just be happy when you get back.
rats are fun pets to have especially if you're the one that they love the most. if these are going to be new rats that you plan on getting before you go on vacation, they'll just adjust to you when you get back after their other caretakers leave.
hope this helps
:)

They will miss you. They will still care about you. I would recommend just getting two rats (preferably two females). Also, try to find someone who will interact with them while you are gone, because that will lessen the stress somewhat. Rats are very intelligent, very loving animals, and make great pets.

They'll remember you. Rats are fairly intelligent and can be taught things that they will remember a week later. I think they'll be fine even if they're not handled in a week, especially if they have another rat to socialize with. They adjust pretty quickly to being handled.

aww i totally understand your concern. my pet rat stewart is with my sister now because i went away to college and could not bring him with me. he is getting well taken care of and when i came to visit him he seemed to remember me just fine. they are very smart animals. if he could remember me after a month, yours will remember you after a week. dont worry, as long as they are in good hands while you are gone...

they will remember you as far as i have experienced. you will want to get a sitter that will play with them while you are gone. they will be happy to be with each other but since you play with them they probably will not be as happy as they usually are. they need their time with us.
