You really need to not do that. Anything you drink, eat, or smoke goes in the babies body thru your milk. Cigarette smoke can also decrease your milk supply.

I didnt smoke but i did have an occasional drink and my kids are fine. I think that with smoking the nicotine also goes into the breastmilk since whatever goes in the body goes in the milk but that it might cause some dependcy for baby and then baby would be harder to wean as well as crankier until their system was cleared but as far as a easy drink now and again it always helped my kids sleep better than if i drank a little more after they were asleep they slept the whole night thru and it was out of my milk and system by morning so no lasting effects but some people will say dont do it or its fine but i say drinking occasionally is fine especially if baby is teethng but i would advise against smoking

I am sure that smoking and drinking while breasfeeding is not the ideal situation even if other people have done it. I think that the occasional single beer or glass of wine is okay while nursing. As for smoking,...... I was a smoker who quit due to pregnancy(three of them) and started up again after i quit breasfeeding(every time). Smoking isn't good for the mother and even if you don't smoke in the presense of your baby i have read that the residue in your clothes and hair do have an effect on the child. Statistics show that a child raised by a smoker is more likely to become one. I can't believe that knowing how hard it was to quit, i started up again. I quit smoking for each of my three pregnancies and during (extended)breastfeeding. The last time I quit was a year and a half ago. This was the first(and last) time i didn't quit because of pregnancy. I quit because my oldest son asked me to. I know the immediate physical effects on the baby are not good but, it goes way beyond that.

I went to a breatfeeding class last night that is taught by a very well respected Midwife in my area and she covered smoking and drinking while breasfeeding. She said you can have a beer, a glass of wine OR a shot. But if you are feeling tipsy or drunk then that means it is going into your breastmilk and you should pump and dump until you don't feel drunk anymore. She said that the baby will be more tired and have diarrhea, with the alcohol in its system. Smoking on the other hand......Even if you don't smoke around your baby, the smoke is still in your clothes and secondhand smoke is full of nasty chemicals....Smoking is just nasty to begin with. I don't I just wouldn't do either while I am breastfeeding. It makes sense.

OMG, as a mom who breast fed 3 childrens, i'm horrified!! She is passing all that badness directly to the toddler plus the certainty the toddler is likewise respiratory in that smoke, maximum of trouble which includes chest infections, ear infections, bronchial asthma. Please tell her she thinks breast feed ing this baby is the final element for it yet particularly it would be safer on a bottle being fed via somebody else in a distinctive room. Its no longer appropriate, the youngster merits lots greater effectual whether she loves it. Love may well be selfish

Smoking while breastfeeding is not good, for all the obvious reasons that any one with a sound mind should already be aware of.

Drinking while breastfeeding is a different story. Because breast milk is basically blood converted into milk it will carry the same toxins and such that your blood does. Therefore, if you drink near to feeding time your milk will have alcohol in it, very bad. But, if you have a drink right after nursing, it will metabolize out of your system by the next feeding (the 24 hours lady above me is wrong). If you want to go out and tie one on, you have to pump and dump the milk, as it is unfit for the baby. You still have to drink in very careful moderation, and I am by no means advocating doing this all the time.

I strongly recommend a breastfeeding class. Most hospitals offer them free of charge or very low cost and you'd be amazing what you'll learn! Congrats on at least having interest in what's best for the baby.

Did a little of both. Drinking ... one drink is generally okay, but no hard alcohol. (side note: Red wine upset my baby's tummy ... white was totally fine. Reg. Beer was fine, but dark ale upset her tummy.)
Smoking ... a big no no. I smoked before I was pregnant, and as soon as I had her, my cravings came back big time. I tried a few puffs off a cig, and she wouldn't even take my milk. I squirted a bit into a glass, dipped my finger in and took a taste ... and all those who say it's no biggie or whatever to smoke and breastfeed ... TRY THIS. Holy cow. It was sssssoooooo nasty. Tasted like drinking milk you've dropped a butt into and left sit a few days.
(PS: On the patch now for three weeks, smoke free!)

Put it this way: would you want your baby ingesting the toxins in your smokes or the alcohol in your drinks? Didn't think so. Think about what a drink does to you, now magnify that as to how it could affect your baby. Just think good and hard before doing so. Do you really NEED it?
While some people on here say, "I did it and my baby is fine," each child is different. To be honest, they may not see the affects on their children till down the road. Best of luck.

Don't you understand how stupid it would be if you smoke and drink while you carrying your child .I think you are an *** for even asking that Question .You better quit smoking and drinking right now if you care. You can transfer the nicotine and the alcohol into they're tiny little body. I know Cause I am a Cancer survivor. If you cant understand this, give your Baby to someone who really wants a child and will take care and love him.

Well if you drink you need to gve baby formula & pump & toss your breast milk for 2 to 4 hours, ask a lactation consultant at your hospital for a better answer (give them a call its free) smoking according to most lactation consultants does not go into the breastmilk however you will still pass on 3rd hand smoke, on clothes hands, skin, hair etc.. SO for many moms that is a personal choice, also one you may want to bring up w/ a lactation consultant

Alchohol and smoking are never ok while pregnant. While the amounts it takes to cause problems are debatable, alchohol is a proven cause of Fetal Alchohol Syndrome and smoking contributes to fetal lung problems and low birth weight. No if's, and's or but's. I have heard of people only drinking once in the whole pregnancy and having problems and I have heard of people not having problems until the drank much more. But why take chances?
