The most famous of the omphalos (navel stones) was placed at Delphi because it was considered to be the centre of the world (axis mundi), or more correctly the place where heaven and earth connect.

I've never heard that. I know there was an oracle of Apollo there once and that a lot of treasures were kept in the shrine to the oracle. King Croesus of Lydia gave a lot of gifts to Delphi.

It was and is NEVER called the "belly button". It is/was called the navel, or omphalos, which means the centre and the tie to the origin.
