The U.S. was neutral until 1917. Belgium was occupied by the Germans.
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the Austro Hungarian heir to the throne who was assassinated.
The Schleiffen plan was meant to be a knockout against France leaving Germany free to attack Russia.
