I've done this at a birthday party and at a 4th of july bbq:
Photo Frame Craft - I bought a heart punch and some pink, purple, red paper. Let the kids punch out a bajillion (a technical number for lots) of hearts. Then they use glue sticks to put the hearts on a 4x6 sheet of white paper. Then take a picture of each child with a digital camera. Print it in black & white cut it out in a heart shape (used a cookie cutter and traced around it to get a good heart without folding the photo). Glue the heart photo on to the 4x6 heart covered paper. Put it in a 4x6 frame from the $1 store. It's an inexpensive craft and the kids LOVE it! They can then give it to their mommy or put it in their own rooms. This allows you to avoid the goodie bag full of cheap candy and junky treats AND uses time to avoid some of the worn out party games.

Another fun activity at a birthday party is playing a form of "blues clues" or "amazing race" to find the supplies for finger painting. I split the kids into 3 groups and each group got a clue (a location) to go hunt for one of the things for the activity (one was bibs/aprons - you could also do newspaper, finger paints, and finger paint paper) Once each team found their "clue" the brought them back and the kids guessed what we were going to do with the supplies. Finger painting was a HUGE hit.

I also went to a 5 year old party where all the kids came dressed up up in pretend play princess clothes. The mom had LOTS of little girl make up (glitter lip gloss and glitter dust - like blush), necklaces, bracelets and boas. Each of the girls got "made up" and then they did a fashion show. It was really cute and fun.

Hope these ideas give you some inspiration! My daughter turned 6 last month. For her party we made earrings for mommies and cards to go with the earrings, and wrapped the earrings in cute little boxes. It was pretty time intensive, but I received LOTS of thank you's from the mommies.

How about a video game like Viva Pinata for the Xbox 360?
Or, games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Hot Potato, Musicial Chairs, and Hide and Seek.

Musical chairs
Pin the tail on the donkey
balloon toss

You can go to birthdayexpress.com for more great and exciting games. Also, you can rent some of those big air floats that kids jump inside off they will definately love that. At my daughter party we had a big parachute as well and they played with that more than anything.

Simon says is always great fun at that age.
Who doesn't like busting the crap out of a pinata at reaping the candy/treat rewards?
There's always pin the tail on the donkey, box-stacking games, etc. The list goes on. I have put a couple of decent links to get you started on some better ideas, and it may just spark you imagination for some creative spin-offs or something entirely different! Have fun!

a few years ago, I did a birthday carnival for my daughter's birthday. Was a huge hit! Did a duck pond, lollipop tree, bean bag toss, just games you would find at a carnival. Did some face painting too! The kids loved it! I made the goodie bags with toys and candies, but did find little bags of cotton candy too.

I can remember Bingo with prizes, Pin the Tail on the donkey, this game where you blow up balloons and in each one put an animal name and they have to pop it and act like the animal and people guess, and musical chairs.

have balloons with strings, hanging from the ceiling. give each child a clothes pin to put in their mouth, to catch a string without using their hands. inside each balloon is a piece of foil that represents a free nickel, after popping their balloons they collect the cash. the one with the most nickels.......stop me when you're ready.
