A gas gauge is not a precision instrument. It works with a float in the tank that gives you a reading. The tank itself is not a uniform shape,so the readings will not always be perfect.

You also have the problem of the fuel moving in the tank. When you take off suddenly, the fuel will move to the rear of the tank. When you stop, the fuel goes to the front. This will cause the fuel gauge to fluctuate.

You could try replacing the sending unit, but it most likely will not make it much better!

It sounds as if your fuel level sender is not working properly. It's probably not the gauge itself. Senders are generally made not to report the normal variations in gas movement you get during driving, unless that variation lasts for several seconds (a half full gas tank might report full when going uphill, for instance, depending on placement of the sender in the tank). If your fuel level is changing between stop signs, then you should have a mechanic take a look at the sender.

Check the float in your gas tank. That could be the problem.

Improve, or check?

Whichever the case is, I can't imagine you being able to do it unless you're a mechanic and equipped like one. Can we say "dealership" ? LOL...

Sorry!
