(A) The Pope does not satisfy the clear requirements to be elected. Namely US citizenship.

(B) The Pope has not been elected, either by a popular vote of the Electoral College.

Now, if there WAS a Pope that was an American citizen, ran, and was elected... why not?

I'm sure that the Constitutional scholars would have a field day over where a person COULD be the "head of state" for two countries (the Pope is considered the head of state of Vatican City).

As much as I respect the Pope, I would say "No." There is the "Separation of Church and State" issue. There is also the question of whether we would be allowed to elect the Pope. The Pope is currently picked from the College of Cardinals. Many of the Cardinals are not American.
