Probably to go against the advice of his special committees, his generals, and everybody else on his bull$hit farce of a policy to "stay the course" and then have the audacity to call it something else!

I think his appointment of Gates was a fairly good and definitely important decision [even though I am NOT a Bush supporter, I try to be fair and give credit when it is due]

The most important leadership decision he made was to decide to ignore the independent study group on the handling of the Iraqi War. It was an important decision to make, and he sure did make it! Good for him. Now history is going to forever remember him as being the guy that started and botched the Iraqi War. That is pretty important.
