My baby was exclusively breastfed until he was nearly 8 months old. Before I started solids, he was nursing every 2 hours. He is now 13 months old and on table foods, and he only nurses before nap and bedtime, but he also sleeps ON me and nurses all the way through, sometimes sleeping with my nipple in his mouth. I'm not saying this is necessarily good! But you should know you're not alone. If you want to try to stop this behavior, you could try the Pantley Gentle Removal method, found at http://babyparenting.about.com/od/sleeping/a/nightfeed_2.htm. Elizabeth Pantley describes a method for stopping the behavior that some babies exhibit of using your nipple for a pacifier while you sleep (this method also works to stop pacifier use while sleeping). The good thing about this method is that it also ensures that you are not stopping his active nursing for nutrition, only the comfort sucking, so that he can learn to sleep without being on the breast.

I wouldn't expect him to sleep through the night, either. Go to this answer and you can learn more about babies sleeping through the night: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=As4r8MjNh20SaiDQzxj0qn_sy6IX?qid=20070201060140AAQBI95.

...and don't let anyone tell you that you need to rush solids. Your breastmilk is providing the best possible nutrition for your baby. Looking back, I wish I hadn't introduced solids for at least the first year.

Hope this helps!

Well I have gone through this and as hard as it is you need to rock or walk your baby back to sleep & wait till he will eat for at least 20 mins , every 3 to 4 hours is very normal for a 7 month old & most BF babies do not sleep through the night that is why so many of us BF moms have the crib in our room or the babies co-sleep.

He may have gotten into the habit of waking at night, it sounds like he's eating plenty during the day. If possible try having someone else go to him at night. If you're still breastfeeding he'll expect it if you go to him, at least our 6 mo. old does. Or maybe he is teething and needs some gum relief. I use Hyland's teething tablets, but there's also baby orajel, or baby tylenol if he's really miserable. Good luck!

I breastfed until my daughter was 9 months old and until I switched to whole milk she did not sleep through the night.
I think some of it was my fault because I was like you and I would let her eat when she wanted to for however long she wanted to. Sometimes she was so distracted that she would only eat for 5 minutes and then 15 minutes later for another 5 minutes and then another 30 minutes later... and so on and so on.
Good Luck!

If your baby eats solids during the day already sounds to me the baby is looking for company at night.
I went through the same thing with both my girls and at that age I can confirm that nursing every 2 hours is hell for you. They do wake up at night and they might need one feeding.I hope you asked your pediatrician about it.Maybe all you need is a combination of increasing solids during the day and a bottle at night. Don't forget to check out if your baby is just thirsty! it happens...if they are breastfeed only, its their only source of liquids.

maybe its not the food he wants when he wakes up he may just be craving attention. try to talk to him without picking him up see if that helps. then try giving him a shirt that you have worn one with your scent on it. like prefume or deoderant something like that. use it as a cover for him and when he wakes up missing you he will smell you and know you are there and go back to sleep. good luck.

Mom, your going to have to stop being at his beck and call..
When he begins to cry at night, wait and let him cry for about 10 minutes, then if he still isen't settled down, go in and rub his ear gently.. he will cry and cry, but begin to teach him how to live without you at night..

Do ask your doctor and see if he might be able to help..

Good Luck..

Breastmilk digests faster than formula. He is a pretty normal breastfed baby.

He might be in "snack mode." Give him a pacifier or some water instead of one of his night feedings.
Good luck!
