As others have said, it is a smiley face. Some variations are:
:-) (happy)
;-) (winking)
:-O (suprised)
:-( (sad)
It helps when you are trying to convey emotion through the internet. Since there is no way to add voice inflection to your words online, little smiley faces (or sad ones) can help the reader discern the intent behind the words. Hope this helps! :-D (big smiley! haha)
