We broke down today, pulling off at a junction, it sounded like a snap and the car wouldn't drive. It went into gear but the clutch was not engaged. Any ideas on what went wrong, how to fix and what cost?
Thanks.

clutch cable, cheap, DIY job or a few minutes for a mechanic. I think you mean 1.9 not 9.1 else you're driving a tank.

If it went snap as you depressed the clutch pedal, then it will be the clutch cable. They cost around £10 and take 10 mins to fit if youv,e done one before. They hook into the pedal at the top(just under the dash) through a hole in the bulkhead into the engine compartment, and connects onto the clutch lever on the gearbox. If youv'e not done one before thier is a spring clip on the pedal which holds the cable in place, flick it with a screwdriver and the cable can be un-hooked. Bit fiddly.

Clutch cable or drive line. Call around for a few estimates as to cost and how soon they can get to it. Good luck. 9.1 Diesel??

if the cable snapped the clutch peddle will fall to the floor because you say it went into gear but did not engage it sounds more like the selector fork

it is not Your fault.
Your dad should know that the U joints was bad.
You lose the drive shaft.
it gonna cost you less then $100.00 US dollars.if You have the drive shaft still in the car.
