Getting traffic is a combination of a lot of things. The key to success is to create great content that visitors want to use, search engines will love and other websites will naturally link to. Of course, it's easier said than done.

You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481

6. Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:

Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
Google Base http://base.google.com
Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/...
Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/
Recycler.com http://www.recycler.com/

@ Robert W & Saraceno, read the ******* question!!!! Who mentioned logging onto an internet connection????

The question was "how to get WEB TRAFFIC without paying?" DUH!!!!

Well, once you have a site up and running it will appear on all the search engines anyway, this won't cost you anything. Then you just need to get the name of the site around, for example if you are a member of a forum then have the url of your site as your signature, when you send an e-mail, have the url at the bottom of every e-mail. There's just a couple of suggestions.

You need to promote, but you must avoid spamming. That means no signing up to forums simply to post a link to yours.
If you are active in the forum other users will check out your profile and probably visit your site. As a forum admin I delete any post by a new user that says "hey, come and visit my website" but if a regular user asks members for an opinion of their website I do not mind.

Submit your website to the big search engines like google and msn, it is free and only takes a minute. (you only need to do this once). Do not pay anything to anybody who says that the can give you a high search engine ranking

Avoid submitting to link farms (sites that are nothing but pages of links)

Optimize your keywords and meta tags (do a google search for meta tag creator)

Submit to directories such as Dmoz or yahoo only when you have more substantial content (I know the problem you face, you need the users to build content, but you need content to attract users)

Search for related (products) directories and apply to be listed in them, make sure they have a reasonable alexa or google rating and that they are not just link farms.

Download the alexa and google toolbars and try to get sympathetic members (if your site has members) to do the same. The alexa toolbar will give you more information about how your site is doing for free. (though it is not totally accurate)

Think about using a homepage to front the site that tells people what it is all about, (this is different to a "doorway page") keep it simple but informative or even better make it bright and memorable, but avoid clashing colours or hard to read text.

Maybe you could try a traffic exchange? I have used both ts25.com and trafficpods.com to get more visitors to my site. 99% percent of traffic from them will probably never come back but if just one takes an interest and becomes a regular poster or visitors it could be worthwhile. If you try any of the big traffic exchanges you will see that most sites shown are pyramid and get rich quick schemes, a site with interesting content should stand out.

always quote sources if you copy an article. (makes you appear respectable)

There are no doubt a million things that I have missed but I hope at least one idea helps.

This is the very last thing I promise, tell all your friends and force them to visit your site.

Good luck.

you can use banner exchange sites such as www.rapidbannerexchange.com where you can post ads on your site and trade traffic with other sites.

Find an open wireless connection - some think this illegal - I call it stupidity on the part of the router owner.

Try searching for wireless networks that are left open. If lucky you may find one. But is this ethical?
