I have seen many many questions on here about umbilical cords being purchased, stolen and worn in some kind of way as a fashion accesory. What is really going on here?? Who keeps posting those questions and what are they talking about?

it's a disgusting joke that some little teenager thinks is funny. Pay no attention to the trolls or you just encourage them.

I don't know how it got started, but it is funny that it seems to be so widespread (at least here).

Mind you the umbilical cords are always the subject of myth. If you do this or that they will knot or wrap around the babies neck. The one I hear most is that if you lift you arms about your head when pregnant the umbilical cord will strangle the baby. This myth has many parts.

One, it is useful, women should take it easy during pregnancy. Not so much now, but in the past when women worked much harder (physically) and tened to be in poorer physical condition nutritionally. Having a rule that prevented a pregnant woman from doing a few chores (hanging laundry, picking fruit) it would certainly help.

Secondly, and this irrational fear persists to today, that the cord will wrap around the neck of the baby. Everytime I hear someone say that they are glad they were in the hospital because the cord was wrapped around the neck I just scream inside. Outwardly I try to correct them, but this fear is very deeply ingrained. The cord around the neck can not strangle a baby. A newly born baby does not require oxygen from the air, unless the more than 50% of the placenta has failed or the cord has failed. Or of course if some moron with a pair of scissors has cut the cord.

This is why water birth works. This is why some babies that are born blue are just fine. Until the baby is well oxygenated and has enough blood the cord will not close on its own. In most cases the placenta will not detach until the cord has closed. Of course if you cut the cord the placenta will still come.

Having the cord around the neck is no worse than anywhere else. There is always the risk of cord compression, but this risk is higher if the cord is against bone or a large part of the body (which the neck isn't really boney or large). Also the cord is full of jelly to prevent such problems, though it isn't always enough.

See so even sane people and doctors have irrational fears about the umbilical cord.

People are kinda nasty sometimes....I have heard about people actually eating the placenta, but never about the umbilical cord. That is so wrong.

The person who posts those is a troll having what they think is fun. It's pretty immature and better off ignored.

I know someone who ate his aunts umbilical cord. he said it tasted like beef jerky. I don't think you can wear it as a fashion accessory because dogs, cats, pigeons, and homeless people would fight you for it.
