For my English class I have to write about a claim of policy concerning the legislation to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.50/hour. I'm obviously going to do research on this topic, but I want to hear your opinions on this matter. Are you for or against this proposal? State your reasons as to why it would be a good or a bad thing to increase the federal minimum wage.

Pros:
Better living for those who are earning it

Cons:
Fewer jobs will be available for those who need a job
Higher prices for goods produced
Those who have earned raises watch them dissappear (i.e. if you were given a raise to $7 you watch you will be at $7.50 like the rest).

I personally believe that the more government screws with economics the worse it gets.

By the way I am 33. I betcha the "oh yes raise it" crowd is more likely to be younger.

I made $3 an hour at my first job (a Wendy's).

If I were a business owner that was forced to raise the wage of my entry level or unskilled workers due to a federal mandate, I would cut a few of the available jobs, and probably lessen the scheduled raises for the rest of my staff. I would also end up having to raise the cost of my products and/or services making them less affordable to my customers who are making minimum anyway. I think the wage issue is a feel good gesture used to buy votes, but it will help no one. I hear the argument that you can not raise a family on five or six dollars an hour. That is true, but if you are making minimum wage, you need not have a family until you have educated yourself or otherwise bettered yourself into a higher paying position. It is not the responsibility of a business owner to raise your family.

I hate to say it but we just can do it with the current economy. Not all businesses can afford to pay $7.50 and hour especially in certain parts of the country.

I would rather have everyone employed instead of raising the minimum wage and having to let people go over it.

they do no longer comprehend economics. they have faith that only passing a regulation will develop the standard of residing for the poor. whilst it does the alternative. once you develop the minimum salary all you're able to anticipate are a decrease in hours and develop in value and human beings will lose genuine earnings. If the minimum salary grew to become into repealed- it may be logical to anticipate a minimum of commencing pay could drop in spite of the undeniable fact that this could bring about decrease expenses and unemployment.

Lets get the homeless people into homes that are protective and have necessary provisions....

Lets aid those that are disabled and the elderly in a more dignified fashion...

Lets help those widowed, divorced, single moms and dads that need to work two jobs by times to pay for the bills, and food and shelter for their youngings.....

Lets accommodate for all people in need first.....

.....and then and only then could we honestly ask the question ....

Do I need more???

Or can I survive by spending less!!

I'm against it. Everyone needs to work hard for the money they make; my salary does not go up every year, therefore, neither should minimum wage.

It is a BAD idea for the gov't to set a minimum wage.
1st - it is unconstitutional.
2nd - it does nothing to alleviate poverty.
3rd - it buys votes for lifetime politicians.
4th - labor is a commodity. The price for any commodity should be set by the market - the ppl who buy and/or sell the commodity, not by government fiat.

I am for the minimum wage being raised since the people who earn it need to make money too. I've been in those shoes before and can say that it sucks but luckily not anymore.
Hope you get a good grade on your paper.

no way could i live on $7.50 an hour, unless i worked 168 hours a week and got time +1/2 after 40 hrs.
what i really should do is get elected to congress, do a 2 year stint, "work" about 21 weeks a year (as they do) and get paid a pension for the rest of my life after "retiring" from there, and live off the "fat of the land", as it were.

I am against.
People will get a little help for a while, just untill prices go back up.
People will be laid off because most companies wont be able to afford to keep all of their employees.
