How do sales agents get paid?

As a self employed sales agent (commission only) I am keen to find out how people in this situation usually get paid, is it on receipt of order? or receipt of full payment when a job is completed? Any advice wecome

I was paid 10% of the sale. I sold office products. I was paid before the full payment was received.
