American champions?

2007-01-31 06:08:13 · 11 answers · asked by smvhammysmv 2 in Sports Other - Sports

for example: baseball, basketball, and football.
many other countries play those games, and Americans never win international competitions so Americans can't say that the national champions are world champions.

I'll have to agree with the first posted answer. I do not know and know exactly what you are talking about. It's like the World Series.

Because in those particular sports, there is no equivalent in other countries. That is not to say that they aren't better or worse.

Take the NBA for example: There is a European league and in fact, many NBA players come from Europe and even play for their own countries in the Olympics. However, the leagues are separate. They do not compete against each other. If the NBA champion were called the US champion, that would imply that there is a champion from somewhere else and the two should compete for the 'world championship'. It doesn't necessarily mean that you have competed against the best in the world, just that there is no level higher.

It is interesting that it only seems to apply at the professional level. The college champion is called the national champion. Maybe the pros wanted to make themselves sound bigger than the college ranks.

I can't say for sure, but I believe that other countries have similar sports in which they proclaim themselves world champions without truly competing against everyone in the world.

because when they first came out they were the only sports like them. take American football or the NFL it didn't become a world wide sport until here recently. that is the same with baseball but i do think they should do a world cup sort of thing take the top teams from every country and put them in a play off against each other.

example: if American football is the only kind like it in the world and a team wins it all then they are the world champions regardless of wether or not they are competing with other countries. in the whole world that team is the best at that sport even if it is only offered in America

i think of a rustic win might advance the acceptance of soccer right here fairly yet not plenty. The MLS might nonetheless be an inferior, low score and attendance league regardless of small boosts from a rustic win (which i for my section doubt will ensue besides). i will watch the international Cup when I can yet i can't help the U. S. group whilst England is enjoying. England is the originator of soccer, they care approximately it in assessment to the U. S., and that i've got a extensive British historic past.
