free stuff in Bristol? I heard it's all been taxed and is no longer free.

Anyway, there are a multitude of free tutorials on the Internet. I would highly recommend learning Hiragana (the squiggly-letter phonetic alphabet for Japanese words) and Katakana (the somewhat angular-letter phonetic alphabet for foreign words). I learned pronunciation and Hiragana in about 2hrs...of course, actually learning the words takes a lot longer. It really helps though, if you are able to pronounce (slowly) something off a street or store sign when you are there. The Japanese are very friendly and very helpful especially to foreigners who make an effort to speak Japanese. The only one that really gave me problems was the Kanji alphabet, but that can even give some Japanese problems. It's mainly used for proper nouns, places and such. Many places in Tokyo use a combination of all three alphabets, even on the same sign or in the same sentence, but you can get used to them. Another good feature is Romaji...using Romanized characters to spell Japanese words. many signs have Romaji also, but the pronunciation is just an approximation...you'll hear the difference when the Japanese try to pronounce it...L's and R's sounds are pretty much the same and interchangeable, because in the Japanese language the L and R sounds are pronounced as sort of a combination of both.

As far as sentence structure and the difference in verbs...it's pretty straightforward and has few exceptions to the rules...but it can be complicated sometimes with gender, tense, and such.
