There are thousands of authors and billions of books, my favorites so far are:
"Generation X" by Douglas Coupland
"Ham on Rye" by Charles Bukowski
"1984" and "Animal Farm" by George Orwell
"High Fidelity" by Nick Hornby
"Oryx and Crake" and "Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood
"Filth" and "Trainspotting" by Irvine Welsh
"Novel with Cocaine" by Albert Camus
"Catcher in the Rye" by J.D Salinger
"Catch 22" by Jospeh Heller
These are just some of the books I like, but best thing to do is find a book you like, read more by the author and then see what the author liked to read, and go from there, see who interlinks and what writing style you like to read.
Happy Reading.

The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Amazing book.
Here's a description:
"The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption, and it is also about the power of fathers over sons-their love, their sacrifices, their lies. "

Anne Rice is an amazing author. I am a geek for all of her work. The Vampire Chronicles are great and very philosophical (and sexed up). The Witches Chronicles are in depth and not for the faint of heart.
