Put simply, you will need to connect your cassette player to your PC soundcard, then play the cassette whilst recording on your PC. A step-by-step guide is available at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/diy
The recording software is the key, there are some free software downloads available at:
http://www.cassette2cd.co.uk/downloads.php
I have used ‘Magix Audio Cleaning Lab’ and ‘Audacity’ – Audacity is particularly popular since it is free!
If you record to WAV format, expect file sizes of around 10MB per minute, or 1MB per minute for MP3 (at 128kbps).
Once you have your digital versions of the recording on your PC, simply burn them on to a CD (Nero burning software or similar..). If you use Magix Audio Cleaning, the software will burn an audio CD for you without needing additional software (assuming you have a CD writing drive of course!) or convert to MP3 (need additional 'dll' file to do this in Audacity)
You can also download a free PDF version of the step-by–step guide from the download page mentioned above, the guide is complete with diagrams and screen-shots.

Hope this helps

Go get a connector that takes RCA jacks (the left and right signal cords that lead from a stereo to the speakers) and switches it to a mini jack the type that plugs into the microphone port on your computers sound card.
The connector looks like a small piece of plastic with a pin on one side and 2 nobs on the other(the rca connectors)
Then you just hit record on the computer and play on the cassette player and you will be set.
I got my connector as a part of an ATI(name of the company) tv tuner card for my pc but I have heard you can get them from radioshack or computerstores seperately at low prices.
I just went to
http://shop.ati.com/searchresults.asp?search_id=10&hidden=0&page=2
and found the part its part #6140004500
Its selling for $12.99
even if you don't want to buy from ati you can at least make a copy of the part pic and discription and see if you can get a good price somewhere else.
It has allowed me to transfer all my music.
Good luck!

You don't seem to mind the quality not being too good !?.
Why mess about with 'S Video 'in/out' leads and tape players when you can download perfect copies of the music you want to listen from the net?.
First site that comes to my mind is www.limewire.com As long as you're not downloading the latest chart stuff, you can download any piece of music you dream up. I've got over 2,000 titles of music (I already had in vinyl, and would never have bought again) from Limewire. They're perfect copies. No hissing, scratching noises, blank bits. etc. Also, If you've got broadband, then you'll download in secs instead of having to play all the tracks in real time. Theres no contest!!

1. have a sound car with out source on it and plug the tape deck into the sound card and record it using a media recorder on the PC while the tape is playing.

2. record the tape to CD via the home stereo unit, then copy the files off the CD onto the PC.
