start with the computer itself. Run clean-up utilities (like Norton disk doctor), and defrag the hard drive. Another way to improve performance it to modify the start-up.

go to the start menu--->run and type msconfig

go to the startup tab on the right and uncheck any program you do not want to run every time the computer starts. This is particularly helpful if you have alot of garbage icons in the system tray on the lower right corner of your desktop.

If you are not sure what something is or does, type it exactly as you see it in a google search window and you will find a link that describes the process information and weather or not it is critical to the system. If it is unnecessary and you don't need it to run on start up, un check it. Go through the list and eliminate the junk. Remember, you are not deleting anything, just keeping these applications from starting automatically when windows starts and saving memory usage. You can still open all of your applications whenever you want.

If you are still slower than you would prefer after the above maintenance, buy and install more RAM.
