Traffic...if everyone takes the shortest route, we would be in gridlock.......take time to appreaciate life...enjoy the journey and stop sitting on a road where the speed limit may as well be mach one...

The obvious answer that everyone states is that your speed via the shortest route (straight line) might be less than by a more circuitous route.

A nice example of that is light. Light always travels by the path which takes the least time (or is at least a local minimum). Light doesn't travel in straight lines, though, because some media allow it to pass through quicker than others. So it takes the path that will get it where it's going the fastest, which may well have bends and kinks.

Resistance.

If the shortest route to the corner is a straight line but there's a gigantic hole in the way. I think the faster route would be to walk around it than devise a way to go straight over it.

Sounds like the high road involves a lot of mountain climbing.
Maybe you could get there in an even shorter distance if you could go thru the solid rock. But alas, we are beings of solid flesh and cannot swim thru solid rock as the gnomes and wee folk can.

Less ground distance, but may have more breaks in travel.
