Without doubt the best option is a Hostel... and let's face it, if you can't afford £10 or £15 a night (in Europe, in Asia, middle east, africa it's £5 to £10) for a nice clean, safe, comfortable hostel surrounded by other like-minded travellers you can meet then you won't be able to afford to eat let alone go anywhere!

The next best option is sleeping in airports - have a look at the site http://www.sleepinginairports.com

Other than that you are taking a risk unless you are with friends... sleeping on beaches, in railway stations, etc is not recommended unless you are in a crowd of friends!

Youth hostels. Some churches. Train stations. Airports. Try to keep clean and neat in appearance so you'll look like a regular passenger in a train station or an airport. Do not look like a homeless person. You may be evicted from public places.

I agree with the youth hostel suggestion. There have also been some articles recently about a group of people who volunteer their couches for strangers. It sounded interesting but I don't remember much more about it.

Youth hostels are normally really cheap, and much safer than the street, especially if you are thinking of travelling to a new place.

Hostels...Safe as houses. Done so myself and you'll meet some great people. Have a great adventure, enjoy yourself. Be good!
