Another use of the term 'overachiever' in sociology is when a individual takes on more and more responsibilities or duties to the point that they cannot perform as well. In this sense, you want to avoid being an overachiever.

"Overachiever" is a term that is often applied to successful people by people who are just jealous of them.

The true meaning of "overachiever," though, is one who puts in an unnecessary amount of work for what their goals require. For example, if your teacher says you should write a 10-15 page paper to get an A+ and you write a 30 page paper, you may be considered an overachiever because you expended a lot of effort that wasn’t entirely necessary.

I would say the first kind of overachiever gets a lot of crap because our society rewards achievement with higher-paying jobs and unsuccessful people become very jealous of their success.

I would say the second kind of overachiever gets a lot of crap because not everyone can accomplish what they can. When they walk into class with their 30 page report, everyone else (who really did their best and were only able to produce 10-page reports) are jealous of their abilities and the fact that they can afford to expend unnecessary effort.

My definition is a person who consistently puts 110% into whatever they do, because of a desire to be the best. I'd imagine they may get grief- as a child or adult, because people could perceive them as goody two shoes or show offs, who want to belittle others by making them look less competent.
