The folks who answered before me gave you generally fine information, but you sound like you're a student and you should learn something from this - particularly if what you learn is fun. So, to help with that, I've provided a link to information about the diet of the soldiers of that period, and it includes recipes for the "hardtack" which sustained northern soldiers, and the "Johnnie Cake" which was the southern equivalent. The north used flour, the south oatmeal. You want a great grade? Bring hardtack to class to impress your teacher.
The article I've included gives more dietary items, like salt pork, fresh or salted beef, coffee, sugar, salt, vinegar, dried fruit and dried vegetables, but sometimes fresh vegetables like carrots, onions, turnips and potatoes. Confederate soldiers did not have as much variety in their rations as Union soldiers did. They often lived on bacon and cornmeal, tea, sweetener (sugar or molasses), and occasional fresh vegetables.

If you mean the soldiers they ate bread with butter and practically simple foods that would be enough to fill their stomach. Though in civil war times there were times in whic they would starve maybe because the enemy attacked their food caravan. Other than that they ate potatoe stews and would even hunt a rabbit a few times. Want more info? then go to a search engine

Soldiers ate hard-tack. A craker/bread thing which grew incredibly hard during storage. Soldiers often cooked it to try and soften the stuff.
