No seriously, in a hydraulic clutch system the word slave refers to the hydraulic cylinder that is operating the clutch fork or diaphragm,
the part that you operate when you push the peddle is referred to as the clutch master cylinder.
Some slaves are mounted on the outside of the transmission, and easy to get to, some are internal to the bell housing and require transmission removal to replace, you do not say what type of vehicle.

Clutch slave cylinders are easy to fix, they are situated at the side of the gearbox connected to a large arm that goes into bell housing, u can either repair it or fit new, if car is over 6 years and has done a lot of miles put a new one on, otherwise u can buy a repair kit in which u remove the cylinder, take off old rubbers, clean the cylinder then inspect inside 4 scoring if it is scored fit new, if it is fine fit new nrubbers, refit cylinder then bleed clutch.

A clutch slave cylinder is mounted to the bell housing covering the clutch, and transfers the energy/motion of the clutch master cylinder to disengage the clutch.
I have rebuilt these in the past. A rebuild kit is fairly cheap.
However, there is a chance yours is shot, and needs a new one, which will cost more, but still not too expensive. A rebuilt unit can also be bought.
After repairing, you will need to bleed the trapped air out of the system.

It's the hydraulic cylinder at the gearbox which pushes to clutch. The cylinder at the pedal is the master cylinder. The master controls the slave. All a bit colonial but that's where the terms originate.

Most of the answers are right that it is the cylinder that pushes the clutch arm but some are fitted inside the bell housing and you need to remove the gearbox to fit them

This is a different job than just replacing the type that fit on the ouitside

Typically Ford Escort, KA Fiesta Focus. fit them inside. Likewise Vauxhall Astra Vectra and others are also inside so a lot depends on the car you are talking about

It is the cylinder down at the clutch bell housing that actually pushes the clutch arm. It is a relatively inexpensive item and easily replaced.

Not anywhere near as expensive as a full clutch unit.

Should cost about £30.

I recently bought a Clutch slave seal kit for my Toyota Tarago. But I am having difficulty locating the "lithium soap base glycol grease" refered to in my service and repairs manual.

I am based in Western Australia, does anyone know where i can get this type of grease or of a suitable alternative.

Any help much appreciated, thanks.

this depends on what car?
some are internal (in the gear box)
some are out side the box, it oberates the clutch rease bearing to allow you to change gear.
if its internal gear box out job and you may as well replace the clutch!
if its on the out side of the box then easy two bolts undo pipe refit new one in reverce order & bleed
