Because that is how the country started. The original states (NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, NC, SC, GA) started out as colonies to the British Empire back in the 16 and 1700s. When these colonies declared independence in 1776 and became the United States, the original colonies became states. As the U.S. grew, it added more states. Other countries have their versions of states, known as provinces. Having states, as part of the system of checks and balances so that no one government entity has too much power, makes it easier for national governments to govern and recognize various areas, i.e. states or provinces, than to govern 1 huge area. That's why no one has ever decided to not have states or provinces.

Wow, the education system is this country is completely shot! Think about what this country is called....you know, the U.S.A.

We started as a group of states loosely bound together by a common cause. A contract between the states, the AoC, defined the terms of cooperation until the US Constitution was ratified, creating the federal government.

The federal government has continuously encroached on the states' rights to the point we're at today: people questioning the need of states! Jeez! Pick up a history book!

If we didn't have states we would be a massive federal government, the very thing the original framers of the AoC and Constitution wanted to avoid. The original 13 colonies were actually thirteen different countries, something that most people forget. The AoC gave states more rights with limited federal powers and it failed. They wrote the constitution in it's place, with the bill of rights adding a few amendments protecting state rights.

The states made the country. Its the United STATES of America, and the states play a very important part with checks and balances, and not allowing the federal government to have to much power.

You have been brain washed, the States started the union, then Lincolns army did away with most States rights. now you say lets do away completely with the states government?, the federal government is NOT supposed to have this much power& control over the States.its all very illgal what they do.States Rights Forever!!!The States keep the nation strong, the South Needs to leave the union again and have nukes to back us up This time Y'all. The States should have control over what they do, not the feds.this was NOT in mind when we got together to form a federal government for the feds to have this much power of our lifes.

That's a good question, but I like how we have states. Each state is nice and interesting in it's own way.
