The helmet that time was made by a leather wool cap that would keep their head warm from winds or the cold at high altitudes. Because if you search you can see that the leather cap was attached to goggles to protect them from colds and winds at the eye.

Oh yea & they tied a silk sash with the rising sun on it over the 'helmet'

They weren't crash helments--just ones with radio contact I suppose to get instructions.
