from what i have seen, heard, read about the western world in general and the US in particular i guess it common for american ladies to smoke and to drink.
I hail from a south asian country where it is impossible to find any woman who smokes or drinks except in a few cosmopolitan pockets.
I just wanted to know if my understanding of american culture was correct. Please do let me know your opinions in this regard.

Smoking and drinking are popularized in the media and is somewhat exaggerated. Sure, alot of people do one or the other or both, but just as many don't do either. Personally, I hate a woman who smokes, and I don't really like a woman who drinks alot

Not all of american woman smoke and drink. I would say that the general population does. I personally did when i was in high school. Now that im a mother, i have a whole new take on my world.

that's a stereotype just like these jokes:
Women are like guns, keep one around long enough and your going to want to shoot it.
Why is a Laundromat a really bad place to pick up a woman? Because a woman who can't even afford a washing machine will never be able to support you.
Did you hear they finally made a device that makes cars run 95% quieter? Yeah, it fits right over her mouth.

No. Not all American women smoke and/or drink..
I do not smoke. However, on occasion - I will have a glass of red wine with a meal. (I am American, but my ancestors are from Italy - so it's a cultural thing.)

I don't smoke or drink.
Smoking is less and less popular in the United States these days because so many people are aware of the health risks. Drinking is probably more common.

I don't smoke but some of my friends do and when they want to smoke we all out to the smoking area outside wheres theres benches and outside heaters...... Best to stick together we think :)

I am an American lady, and no I do not smoke or drink, you will definitely find so many more that also don't smoke or drink.

I don't drink but I smoke like a chimney. Most of my friends smoke and drink, and the ones who don't drink (like myself) stopped because they couldn't control their drinking.
A lot of American ladies do drugs, too! Woohoo!

im american an i only drink sometimes, but hate smokeing . it may be more culturaly acepted though? it was my impression that smokeing is less atractive then it used to be an less people doing it an more people trying to quite. i know men love it when they find out i dont smoke

We're not all like that. A lot are but not all. I for one do not smoke but I do enjoy the occasional drink.
