It's interesting that you have worded your question in this way. Often, people ask who was the first person to orbit the Earth, and the answer is usually given as "Yuri Gagarin".
Well, here are the facts:
At 9:08 am on April 12, 1961, Russia, a member of the Soviet Union, launched the world's first manned spacecraft, Vostok 1, carrying Yuri Gagarin. Gagarin became the first person in space, and circled the Earth once before re-entering the atmosphere and landing. However, the Russians brought their craft down on land, rather than in the sea as America did, and they weren't exactly sure just how hard the craft would hit on landing. So, during the Vostok program, the pilots ejected before touchdown and came down on their own parachutes.
The significance of this is that under the rules of the FAI, the organisation that recognises air and space acheivements, this meant that Gagarin and the other Vostok cosmonauts did not complete their flights, as they were not in their craft at the end of the journey. The Russians tried hard to conceal this for years in order to have their flight recognised, but strictly speaking, it was the American Alan Shepard who was the first person to complete a spaceflight (which was sub-orbital), and John Glenn was the first person to complete an orbital flight of the Earth.
The fact remains that Yuri Gagarin from Russia was the first person to make a flight into space.
You see, it's all down to how you ask the question :)

The first man in Space was Yuri Gargarin (I´m not sure of the spelling). He was a Russian astronaut flying in the name of Russia (or more correctly the USSR). Some people might be mistaken to think it was the Americans and that Neil Armstrong was the first man in space but he was simply the first man on the moon.
