I just started working for a large financial firm 3 months ago and hit my quarterly bonus which was about 1/4 of my total salary.

My company is going to withhold this money from me because I was still in the probationary employment period (90 days) when I achieved this bonus.

Should that matter or is it even legal?

The point is that I hit all my sales numbers and deserve this bonus. What should I do? I am very angry about all of this.

Unfortunately the answer is yes, they can withhold your bonus, only because it is not included in your regular promised salary. Now in saying that, many companies have different policies about there bonus systems. They can rule it anyway they want so i would definatly go back and ck to see if you signed any documents when you were hired explaining the bonus system. Most comapnies won't pay out any bonus while your in that 60 or 90 day probationary period, so just double check with HR!!!

Bonus are usually discretionary and it should say so in employee's manual. I recommend you look into the company rule first before taking it further.

In many companies, employment of ONE year or longer is required.
