Yesterday I somehow lost my W-2 form on the floor, I know I can get another copy but I'm worried about identity theft. My name and taxt identification number were on it...do I have reason to worry?

yes, in this time, identity theft is rampant. I'd put a 'fraud alert' on your credit with the three companies Experian, Transunion and Equifax. That means nobody can open a new account without your approval...it's kind of a pain if you're trying to get something yourself, just extra verification, but it's worth it.

I'm not sure if you can notify the Social Security Administration also, to make sure illegal aliens don't try to use your SSN to work, then you'll be liable for taxes on all their earnings, unless you prove that you didn't work those multiple jobs.

You didn't say on what floor . Some places it wouldn't be a worry and others , yes . You need to be especially careful with papers of this sort . In this day and age ,unfortunately, identity theft is a serious problem . And there are a lot of illegals that would pay good money for a working social security number .

Call the three major credit reporting bureaus and have them put a fraud alert on your account. Go and file a police report about your missing W-2 so that if anyone does try to steal your identity you'll have an easier time fighting it. Check your bank account and credit reports regularly. Ask the credit bureau's and your credit card companies for more advice.

Employers are required to substitute lost W-2s. they could charge a real looking volume, yet they don't look to be allowed to refuse outright. You call the IRS on the phone and tell them that you requested for a W-2 and your corporation is refusing to provide it to you. The IRS will mail you a "change" style for you to use to report your taxes with out the W-2, and it is going to tell your corporation to provide you a W-2. in the journey that your corporation nonetheless refuses after the IRS tells them that they haven't any decision in this count number, then the IRS will superb your corporation quite a number of money for refusing. you is actual not in worry. Your corporation will.
