monthly fee for service on the furnace. when the repairman comes to fix the thing should i tip him 10 or 20 bucks or not necessary to tip?

I don't tip repair people. I do tip movers, delivery boys, waiters, bellmen, doormen, concierges, parking valets, skycaps, cab & limo drivers...I can't think of anyone else right now. Not repair people, though. I am quite willing to provide them with something to drink and bathroom facilities, but not money.

No you don't have to tip because us but be kind .A cup of water on a hot day or cup of coffee on a cold day is great.A call to the manager or note to the company expressing great service is the best thing in the world.When it gets slow lay off's happen and a note helps prevent that.Also if your furnace is in the attic and it's summer time tell your service co.Early morning would be the best time for service.To those that don't know the blower motor in your furnace works for heating and cooling.Going into attic when it's hot is bad.Temps can get to 140 degrees up there.

Is it necessary? I don't think so, but if you DO offer/give a tip,it should be about 20% of the bill amount. Another thing to keep in mind,if you tip once,you should keep on tipping indefinitely. You may also find that if you tip the repair person, that your quality of service will increase. A few extra dollars in the repair person's hand,can mean the difference between him/her coming to your rescue at 2:00am or making you wait 8-10 more hours for him to finish his/her breakfast & coffee. *G*

I think it`s appropriate if they go out of their way to do something extra or special such as repair something unfore seen that may cause great aggravation in the near future. Sure I think fending off a potential headache at 2:00 A.M. is worth a tip. Something I`ve noticed in my ventures, rich people, as a rule , don`t tip. Middle class do occasionally. Poorer people do when they can afford it.

Normally no, they are already getting paid, and certainly not normally minimum wage either.
However my heater was in a nasty crawl space (yeah I know it goes with the job). But he did excellent work, advised me that due to burning kerosene instead of fuel oil #2 I could push back maintenance to every other year.
So I thanked him, and gave him $20.

It's not necessary but they will remember you in the future and possibly do a little above what they normally would.

Not even a six pack would work, you would need to do some heavy drinking for any of the repairmen that come to my home, all I get is the crack of dawn and then a bill.
