Have it professionally inspected. We were in the same situation when we bought our house. The chimney sweep said the chimney was in great shape, the fireplace was clean as a whistle, and to never light a fire in it until we had some work done.
The reason was, he said, that the grate and doors in the front were probably a cheap set of doors from a department store, and the air vents in them did NOT match the location of the air intakes of the firebox behind it. That meant that the firebox in the fireplace would overheat because it wasn't properly ventilated, possibly causing a fire.
So if you want to use the fireplace, have it inspected by someone that knows what they are doing. It might cost you a hundred or two. That's cheap insurance, compared to the cost of rebuilding the house or repairing a lot of fire damage.
Or losing a life.

HAVE IT INSPECTED, ASAP. The average person can not tell it there are dangerous levels of coreisode built up in the flume. Only someone trained as a chimney inspector can. If your levels are high, your chimney can catch fire and you won't know it till it's too late. Your local chimney sweeps usually have someone trained to do inspections. Plus update or install Carbon Monoxide detectors. The money you pay for the inspection and cleaning plus the detectors will be MORE THAN WORTH IT!

I personally would have the chimney inspected by a professional. Talk to people around you and see if you can get a referral or call your local BBB. You have too much to loose if it is not in proper working order. If it's fine, then you have piece of mind that it is fine! It is alway better to be safe than sorry.

Oh stable god, no. Candles will harm your gasoline logs and probable ignite a hearth as your gasoline is often on. gasoline fireplaces do no longer fee plenty to apply. they are completely efficient. We turn ours on each nighttime from the time it gets chilly exterior by using the iciness and we've on no account had even a spike in our heating expenses. With the hearth on, the warmth comes on much less. as quickly as we had a heatilator further to previous residences, it replaced into much extra efficient. Please do no longer play with gasoline. and activate the hearth. i will assure from our journey which you will get your environment as we've and not see huge expenses by using fact of it. have self belief me, my husband does not be turning it on each nighttime if it replaced into blowing out our heating expenses.
