On the 1995-96 home opener a rat was in the players dressing room and Scott Mellanby killed it. That night he got 2 goals and the phrase a "rat-trick" was started. After that the fans threw rubber rats onto the ice when the Panthers scored.

According to wikipedia:

On the night of the Panthers' '95-'96 home opener, a rat scurried across the Florida locker room. Mellanby reacted by "one-timing" the rat against the wall, killing it [1]. That night he scored two goals, which Vanbiesbrouck quipped was "a rat trick". Two nights later, as the story found its way into the world, a few fans threw rubber rats on the ice in celebration of a goal. The rubber rat count went from 16 for the third home game to over 2,000 during the playoffs. In a freak coincidence, 1996 was also year of the rat according to Chinese Astrology.

As far as I know, only rubber and plastic rats were ever thrown- no actual dead rats (unlike the actual dead - and sometimes living - octopus tossed in Detroit).

here is some advise...you neeed an xbox 360 to play 360 games, but there are a few types of 360's One doesn't have a harddrive and its the cheapest DO NOT BUY THIS ONE, he will not be able to save games and will spend alot more money in memory cards. there is the elite which has a bigger harddrive and an HD dvd player this one is also a waste of money as HD dvd players have already gone obsolete. Now the best deal is the normal xbox 360, i think its 299. and it comes with a 11 or 20 gig hard drive i cant rememebr which is big enuff for heavy video game use. If you are buying this just for fun and not a present then you may just stop my your local gamestop and ipck up a used one there usually 10 % cheaper and have been tested. unforutaly you dont get the 3 year warrenty though and the xbox 360 has been known to be a fragle system. Im already on my 3rd one b/c they keep breaking.

During the 1996 playoffs Florida's captain Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the locker room with his stick. That night he scored 2 goals, and goalie John Vanbiesbrouck reffered to it as a "rat trick". Once the Florida fans caught wind of it, they started throwing rubber and plastic rats on the ice during the Panthers games.

I believe they banned it after that season.

Florida Panthers. Panthers are felines, or cats, and cats are known for catching mice. So they throw mice.
