Your computer well may be infected. The Messenger Service is not vital to Windows XP and it is a security vulnerability in which many hackers have exploited. Create a system restore point. To completely turn off the service, go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > scroll down and right click Messenger > choose "Stop" > right click Messenger again > "Properties" > under Startup Type, choose "Disable" > [Apply] > [O.K.] > Restart.

You can choose to completely remove Messenger by Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs...> Windows Component > Messenger.

If you don't already have an antivirus program then you can find a free one at: http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/ There are other free security software.

It's not a 'virus' but it is content thrown at you via the internet. I've included directions on how to stop your system from receiving such messages for various operating systems:
Windows XP Professional

1. Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
2. Click Administrative Tools
3. Click Services
4. Double-click Services
5. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
7. Click the STOP button
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

Windows XP Home

1. Click Start-> Settings -> Control Panel
2. Click Performance and Maintenance
3. Click Administrative Tools
4. Double-click Services
5. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
7. Click the STOP button
8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
9. Click OK

Windows 2000

1. Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Services
2. Scroll down and highlight Messenger
3. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties
4. Click the STOP button
5. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

That would only prove the hostility in the mind of those that hear the news and their incapability to control the situation. It'd probably be best to shoot them instead of the messenger.

It is a mild form of virus / adware yes.

A very good adware dector should resolve the problem or uninstall Windows messenger anre re - download it.

i used to have this thing when i was running XP SP1, so you have two choices:

1.download a patch for this (as i did,just go to Microsoft.com and search "messenger service" and you'll find a patch, install it..or visist the link below)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-043.mspx

2.download SP2!

and no, it wasn't a virus.. the patch will make these disappear!
