The key to 'bang for your buck' is in the gain of the antenna regardless of the type. Remember for every 3db of gain, the actual power is doubled. Also remember that if you have a long wire to go from the ethernet card to the antenna, your power is severely attenuated. Short wires are good...or antennas that connect directly to the card are better. However, that normally doesn't work if the computer is put into a cabinet or it would look silly if you walked around with your laptop over your head, looking for a signal. You'll have to compromise on power and usability.

Now, back to the types you listed...both Yagi and Parabolic are directional antennas...you mentioned you wanted to hook one up to your laptop...I'm assuming you have an external antenna jack or a card that has one. You'll have to point the antenna toward the hotspot when you are out and about. To get the maximum distance, you'd have to put an antenna at the hotspot, point it, and put one on the computer and try to line them up.

To try this out cheaply, you can make a Yagi type reflecting antenna set from some old metal coffee cans. With a normal wireless-G ethernet card, you can actually get several miles with one of these setups...of course it has to be stationary and aligned correctly and your quality is subject to interference from fog, rain, differences in atmospheric pressure, people walking in front of the cans, or birds flying in front, wind making the cans wobble...etc.

Research Antenna engineering. Yagi and Parabolic are just common types of Antennas used. Here's something to get you started:

i've got confidence a lesson in international family is so as. you're inquiring for help from others who're giving it for unfastened. it is fairly probably human beings would be extra prepared to help while the request would not contain demands or statements of authority or superiority as is shown on your 2nd paragraph. It additionally helps your reason once you are worried to persist with the factors of English Grammar and Composition regularly required to bypass the fourth grade. on account which you researched this and are an expert as you declare, then why are you asking all people? I recommend you learn what's meant by way of a parabolic antenna and then learn what a satellite tv for pc / television dish layout is. as quickly as you have finished this, you will learn that the two are parabolic. it is comforting which you have finished your homework thoroughly. in case you do not understand the way a parabolic dish works, open your calculus e book and overview conic sections intimately as this might conceal it. in reality you desire to create an elliptical association. back, in case you who studied so nicely, do not understand what an ellipsoid is, bypass decrease back to the calculus text fabric and overview conic sections. the gap of roughly a million.4 KM demands a centred transmission that's barely provided by way of an ellipsoid - which mandates a parabolic as you, the found out one, already knows (in case you're so found out). to not insult you, oh great found out one, you besides mght understand you may desire to have a clean, unblocked line of sight between the two parabolic antennas - or maybe one tree leaf it not appropriate. on condition that trees improve, you besides mght understand you may desire to devise for this interior the placements. extra desirable, on account that snow, ice, extreme wind, and different climate aspects will intrude, you, the found out one, understand to decide on the kind of parabolic antenna that could have minimum climate matters. Now, and that i'm valuable i'm insulting you, maximum found out one, evaluate the cables, lightening arresters, amplifiers, and purely be sure you have appropriate sign power after losses to enable the equipment to artwork.

You can find plenty of information on the web. For example:
