I recently read a book "Paradise" by Koji Suzuki and it was quite refreshing, so I'm interested about your experience with Japanese books.

Yukio Mishima is great, but quite dark.
There is also a lesser known author named Banana Yoshimoto (Not sure why Banana...) who wrote a very good short novel called "Kitchen" that is worth reading.

I absolutely recommend a previous answerer's pick, Haruki Murakami. Although my favorite works are _Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World_ and _The Wind-up Bird Chronicle_.

I also recommend novelist Junichiro Tanizaki. His novel _Naomi_ is quite absorbing and worth reading.

Soseki Natsume & Mishima are the two "classic" eastern authors. Banana Yoshimoto & Haruki Murakami are greater cutting-part. for my section do not probable care lots for eastern literature, yet they have gained an surprising form of international awards. savour!

Haruki Murakami. Very luminous minimalist prose. And his fiction touches on human isolation/intimacy, distance, and self-imposed alienation in love. In short, his works are coldly erotic. I'd recommend "Beauty and Sadness" and "House of Sleeping Beauties". Or "Snow Country".
