I'm not kidding. If two men or two women marrying one another is such a threat to the sacred bonds of marriage, then why is marriage so easy to get out of? Why keep divorce legal, but rally against letting gay marriage be legal? Isn't divorce a bigger threat to marriage than love?

To the smart-alecs out there - I was talking about divorce in general, not the divorce of gay couples.

And I'm treating them as two separate issues. If you are trying to protect the sanctity of marriage, why is homosexual marriage the ONLY battle you're willing to fight? THAT is the point of the question I'm asking. None of you has answered it yet.

I just don't see how anyone's marriage has to do with anyone else's at all! There are two parts to marriage-the civil contract which any citizen can enter into-it's just a contract, for goodness sake! The religous ceremony is the second part and is completely a choice. Churches can choose who they will marry in their church and that's just fine-it's their right to decide. But the civil contract is only that. I mean-the bachelor marries the bachelorette on reality tv. How was that celebrating the "sanctity" of marriage. The answer is that it didn't! Whatever sanctity exists is between you and your own partner or the couple and their own church or personal contract. The first marriage doesn't have any affect on the second marriage-only you and your partner affect your own marriage.

I don't see why people think one affects the other-if someone else has a bad marriage, it has nothing to do with yours at all-you still have every opportunity to have a great marriage(even if 50% of marriages are bad)

I agree. I also agree with Melissa Etheridge about how gay people shouldn't pay their taxes because they're not fully recognized as citizens with rights!! Even IF the bible says it's wrong (which is highly questionable due to contextual errors), isn't that mixing religion and politics?? Aren't we supposed to be guaranteed a seperation of church and state...especially since the government doesn't recognize an OFFICIAL religion? Therefore the argument that so may try to use that "the bible says it's wrong" is null and VOID.

The issue of divorce does not play well in the game of politics like a good old fashioned gay bash does.

EXACTLY!! The divorce rate in this country is 51%!! Heterosexuals certainly aren't getting it right, let the Homosexuals give it a go! But guys, it all boils down to the fact that we are all HUMANS! Why can't we all have the same HUMAN rights??

You know, that's a good point. I've often wondered the same thing, however, I refuse to get into a discussion on the rights and wrongs of homosexuality.

Your question assumes that those of us who are opposed to gay marrige are in favor of divorce. Most people are opposed to divorce, but it happens sometimes. Too often for my comfort.

there you go. the right wing does not think, they go by what they are told. It's great being told by a right wing nut job that gay marriage is bad when they are in their fourth marriage.

Yes but divorce isn't a good enough smokescreen to use for hating gay people....

Well, "no fault" divorce is a terrible miscarriage of marriage.

It's a terrible thing that should indeed be outlawed.

Cheers, mate.

MARRIAGE IS A RITUAL BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN. MARRIAGE IS TO DECLARE YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR PARTNER AND TO PROCREATE. HOMO'S CANNOT PROCREATE. WHY DO HOMO'S WANT WHAT HETEROS HAVE. ARE THEY HETROPHOBES? DIVORCE IS ALSO A STRAIGHT THING. WE CAN MARRY AND WE CAN DIVORCE. WHY DO WE HAVE TO EXCEPT THE UNNATURAL? WHAT MAKES HOMO'S SO RIGHT? IF WE WERE ALL HOMO'S THEN THE WORLD WOULD END. HOMOSEXUALITY IS GODS WAY OF SAYING WE DON'T WANT YOUR TYPE TO CONTINUE.
