Living Graves - by George Bernard Shaw

We are the living graves of murdered beasts,
Slaughtered to satisfy our appetites.
We never pause to wonder at our feasts,
If animals, like men, can possibly have rights.
We pray on Sundays that we may have light,
To guide our footsteps on the path we tread.
We're sick of war, we do not want to fight -
The thought of it now fills our hearts with dread,
And yet - we gorge ourselves upon the dead.
Like carrion crows we live and feed on meat,
Regardless of the suffering and the pain
we cause by doing so, if thus we treat
defenceless animals for sport or gain,
how can we hope in this world to attain,
the PEACE we say we are so anxious for.
We pray for it o'er hecatombs of slain,
to God, while outraging the moral law,
thus cruelty begets its offspring - WAR.

Human beings are OMNIVORES, not herbivores by nature. Meat is a PART of an omnivores diet.

Look at your teeth. They are all of even size - an indication of a natural omnivore anatomy.

Choose to eat meat or not. Choose, but do not dictate your choice on other people who choose differently.

And don't lump your choice to not eat meat with the appeasement movement.

Hey... my body really *is* a temple!

Dude, Just because a famous poet has a problem with eating meat and makes a lame attempt to equate being omnivorous with a predisposition for war does not necessarily make it so.

Last time I checked there were many species of carnivorous and omnivorous beasts that occupy this planet that do not engage in war. Further, the last time I checked God had given man dominion over the beasts.

Wake up and observe the wondrous natural world that surrounds you!

When Flipper puts a dolphin on the moon, then I'll accept that humans and animals are equivalent. Until then, I will continue to be a higher life form and will act accordingly. In other words, I will eat the life forms that are lower on the food chain.

You can put the question in the dust bin where it belongs. God said he created all things for our benefit. And eating meat since the fall of man is a necessity. I am amazed at people not wanting to accept Gods sayings. It is our pride. We would rather "make a big deal of it" whatever it happens to at the moment.

Violence is violence, whether it is against humans or animals. Bloodshed is bloodshed, and if we want a better world and to live in peace, we must start first by stopping violence in our own lives. How can we expect a world of peace if we keep on using living beings as mere merchandises? As biodiversity is decreasing drasticaly, we must revise our relation to the living Earth and to the living beings therein. Commercial cattle raising is one of the major causes of environmental destruction and it maintains a collective karma of death and cruelty. It is up to each one of us to make a change in our lives, in order to bring a better world of peace. I choose non-violence and respect of all life.

that's the biggest bunch of crude I believe I've ever read.
killing an animal and eating it is not cruel.
if it were, then nearly every carnivorous animal is also at fault.
we are a product of nature as are the other animals and plants of this planet.
we do not get all of our nutrients from plants and fungi.
just because Shaw said it, doesn't make it so.

Maybe... It can't be good for a society to have the inhumane conditions existing in commercial slaughterhouses underlying one of its most fundamental aspects, i.e. food supply/cuisine. SOmeone has to work in the slaughterhouses, and one wonders how it affects them... Something to think about, I guess.

Why stop there? Why not protest animals killing other animals? Do you know how many bugs a bat kills every night?
Although animals do have souls, there purpose is to "serve" us, and therefore through our eating them, we elevate there souls.

War is human slaughter, and stands for something.
Slaughterhouses and eating meat is animal slaughter, for feeding humans. I do not see the connection.
