Seems like a good idea but what do I know?

Yes this is a good idea if you have a garden. The leaves will decompose and release substances needed by the plant.
But it is not a good thing to let decompose in a pot. Because the pot has very little room and if the plant is not big enough it can be infected. So in that case you can decompose the leaves in a decomposer or a place in your garden and every year take the soil made from leaves which is a very good and strong fertilizer and put it while repoting your plants or when planting new plants.
Do not ever use just compost. Always mix it with peat or plain soil . Because you can burn your plants.
