My baby's began biting while I breast fed her so I had to immediately stop nursing. At first I would extract just enough milk to ease my discomfort. Now its been about a week and a half and my right breast has a failrly large knot and is extremely painful. I was told that to take Ibuprofen every other day and the milk will dry up. Is this true? What should I do about the knot? I'm scared.

In case you nurse another child, you do not have to immediately stop breast feeding because your baby is biting you. I breast fed 4 babies, the last 2 until they self-weaned at 11 months and 14 months. A quick release by breaking the suction with your little finger between her mouth and your breast with a very firm "no" every time she bites (accompanied by putting her down if needed) will stop the biting in no time. What you are probably experiencing is a plugged milk duct, fairly common when nursing stops abruptly. Using a breast pump or hand expressing does not adequately empty the breast and can cause the milk to back up. Generally, when you are trying to wean your baby, you will want to use cool compresses on your engorged breasts (cabbage leaves work well, put refrigerated cabbage leaves around your breasts inside your bra. Replace when the leaves wilt.). However, if you have a plugged duct, you will want to try a warm compress on that area to get the milk flowing. Also, massage your breast above the knot. If you develop a fever or the area becomes red, swollen and painful, you have probably developed mastitis, a painful breast infection needing antibiotics to cure.

I got this with all 3 of my kids. With the last one it was so painful that I couldn't lift my arm. It can progress to masitits if not careful.
1. I would definately call your ob gyn. That is what I did. They may or may not want to see you. They may or may not put you on anitbiotics. This is a clogged milk duct. If left untreated you will get a fever and worse. Look it up on the internet. It can get bad.
2. Use warm compresses on the area. I got a wet washcloth and put it in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it to a heat I could tolerate. The heat will help maybe let the milk down. After the heat, massage the area by moving from the base of your breast towards the nipple. This will help move any clog. I know it hurts but the heat helps it not be so uncomfortable.
3. You can also use iboprofin. It will help a bit with the pain.

If you have a fever, headache, body chills or any other flu like symptoms, you probably have mastitis. The best way to get rid of this is to call the dr. They will give you antibiotics. It's caused by a clogged milk duct. It gets infected and causes you to freak out. If you're still going to nurse, keep nursing on that side a lot. Get the clog clear. If you can't nurse, try pumping. If you are done nursing, all you can do is get rid of it through time and antibiotics. Wear a sports bra or something like it. It will help you dry up quicker. Good Luck! :)

I would see your doctor about this and if they are the ones that told you to take the ibuprofen then I would get a second opinion. It could be a clogged milk duct. If the area is red, tender, and very painful you might have inflammation of the breast or what is known as mastitis. Either way I would get a professional opinion.

you could have a clogged milk duct, that can lead to more serious problems if it doesn't go away. you should call your OB! by the way, most babies will stop biting at your breast after just a little bit. you can simply say a firm no in a low tone, and take the breast away immediately, for just a short time (10 seconds or so). your baby will associate that with the biting, and it will stop.

There are better ways of dealing with a biting baby. At this point you probably have a blocked duct and you need to drain that side often until you get the blockage out.

It is not recommended to quit breastfeeding cold turkey because it puts you at high risk of infection

Ibuprofin will not cause your milk to dry up it is perfectly safe for nursing mothers.

Like maximum all different posters suggested, it feels like a plugged milk duct. those can develop into mastitis (breast an infection) if it does not sparkling up by itself. the indications of a breast an infection are flu-like indications...a fever, discomfort on the positioning, and a crimson mushy breast. proceed to objective heat compresses...take heat showers while accessible, and attempt breast compressions. To do breast compressions, you employ your thumb or 2 palms and rub down above the plugged duct on your aereola (not all a thank you to the nipple). now and back compressions can incredibly relieve the duct. the different element you're able to do is breastfeed your toddler in basic terms for one consultation...infants are generally the main effective at removing the plugged ducts. sturdy success!

If the knot hurts could be a blocked milk duct. Ibuprofen and a hot compress helps to let the milk down. If it gets red, hot, and makes you feel ill, it could have gotten infected and you'd end up with mastisis(sp?). You'd need antibiotics in that case.
