the fumes are supposed to go UP the chimney. there is an air flow that goes from your house into the stove and up the chimney, so if the stove is working properly there should be 0 (or close to 0 fumes comming into your house. It is best to keep the door closed for more reasons:
1) That is how the stove was designed to work and the draft that keeps the fumes from comming into your house is stronger when the door is closed.
2) The stove burns much more efficiently when the door is closed or open just very little.
3) The danger of hot coals jumping out of the stove and causing a fire hazard is eliminated when you close the door

I do sometimes burn with the stove door open for short periods of time but you have to always be right there in front of the stove when the door is open and you have to have a good fire going. A weak fire will not burn well at all with the door open.

Also the person mentioning carbon monoxide doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.
First of all when you use a stove to heat your house, your house CAN NOT be airtight, as oxygen in the house is drawn into the stove, burned and expelled up the chimney, the air pressure inside the house starts to decrease, this causes fresh air from the outside of the house to come in through the cracks and small openings to equalize the pressure. There is no way for carbon monoxide to form because gases can't travel against the airflow.
However, opening the door when the fire is not strong enough to create a good draft up the chimney, in some cases can cause problems.

As long as the stove was installed and is working properly you shouldn't have an issue with fumes or CO. There is a risk of embers coming out so only leave the door open if you will be infront of the stove. Also studies have shown that with open fire places actually draw heat out of a house it only is warmer in the room with the fire place(due to the draft induced by the fire sucking air out the chimney)I would suspect leaving the door open to a wood stove would have a similar effect.
Good day and keep warm!

There's no danger from the fumes, but if there's a roaring fire going and you leave the door open it is possible to burn up all the oxygen in the room and all that is left is carbon monoxide, which is poisonous. That is also why you should not heat the house with the oven open.

No but a flying ember or spark could start a fire which will melt carpets and plastics causing really bad fumes to kill you. What little heat you would get from the open door is not enough to risk you life.

Opening the door will only draw the air out of your house, and increase the risk of fire. If you want more heat you should have a fan installed on your fireplace to better circulate the air.

some wood when burning can be rather caustic and have a horrible smell. If y ou are burning oak, hickory, or pine, you don't have a problem, but cherry and walnut stink horribly and you will find woods like poplar and cedar popping out flaming hunks of stuff.

I would worry more about sparks starting a fire than fumes. You will probably also have more dry air in your house. Might need a humidifier.

A little of the fumes will be inhaled. It's best to keep it closed.
