the legacy of slavery is the main source of divisivness in this country.

On the white side, there are still white people (a few) that feel as though black people are inferior and should be treated as animals). While denying the fact that blacks in america are largely white mans creation.

On the black side, many black people still believe that their place is at the bottom of society (the proverbial fly in the jar). And so aim to rebel against society as a whole rather than participate.

slavery does have a clear and present effect still on society. based upon many of the racism that flows sometimes daily between blacks and whites (not only them i stress) can leak into daily lives which is why many organizations such as naacp, hbcus exists. why, because it has gone on for over 400 years and only been abolished for less than 150 years, that's some people great great grand parents. Not to mention after slavery came segregation. So slavey lead to a lot of other unpleasant things when it was over. It didnt just ended and black and white people became friends and all was forgiven. Blacks were persecuted continuously until the 1960s when we have the civil rights issue.

I believe that human attrocities should never be forgotten...but we need to be careful to keep them in context. Slavery should no longer have an effect on our society today. And, in fact, I don't think it does. There are some that keep the discussion alive, criticizing one group for the pain and suffering of their forefathers. But if we continue to look backward, and dredge up the past, we cannot move forward. Blaming slavery for our society today is irresponsible, and not serving anyone well. It will be remembered, and we need to ensure that nothing like it exists in the future.

Does slavery 'have' an 'effect' on society? Use your head. Of course it does. You don't need anyone to tell you how or why unless you're less than 8 years old, which you are clearly not.
