Take it one step at at time. Don't sit there all day with your books (how dull!). Instead, break up your studying into smaller periods and schedule your days around the studying. For instance, spend two hours on one subject (take notes in the margins, review your notes from lecture and see how that compares to what's in the textbook, write down questions you have). After the two hours, reward yourself with something (intramural sports, a club meeting, a movie shown on campus--but get out of your house/apt./dorm!). Return for another two-hour session in a different subject; eat dinner, watch a favorite program; finish off with one more two hour session; call a friend to chat and then go to sleep.

You'll need to adjust your schedule as due dates approach and during exam periods, but the idea is to schedule the time for study and for play: college is about mastering course content as well as opening yourself to new experiences, meeting new people, and exploring your interests. Make time for these things and you'll also be able to apply the course content you've mastered in your study periods to things you find fascinating :-)

The key to being a better student is better understanding what your teachers want from you. Teachers believe in the subject matter they teach, but the point of school is to learn life skills not remember facts! Learn to research and take notes this will cut your study time in half and make you a much better writer not to mention a quicker one, thus making you a better student. Also befriend your teacher they are less likely to give you the lower of two grades if you are on the boarder.
